I fell into art by accident 3 years ago. I've had zero art training, don't know what or how I'm doing, but love the possibilities. Not just all the things you can do with art, but all the things art can do for you. I'm now a collage in the making, and sixty going on six (my daughter gave me a button-making machine last year, and let me tell you, that is the best gift).
The more I immersed myself in art, the more I realized -- not only can art be by all for all, it can do other things too -- eg build bridges, bring comfort, level the playing field. Art is the best equalizer -- the fool on the hill and the man on Wall Street can both create and enjoy, whatever however they want.
My daughter's high school motto was: "They can because they think they can." True. With confidence (and hard work, of course), comes success. Then with success, comes more confidence.
But what about those who've never tasted either?
If the lucky ones can because they think they can, and the unlucky ones cannot because they think they cannot, and the twain never meet, what hope is there for liberty, equality, and fraternity? So I started supporting non-profits that helped people help themselves.
After the 2016 election, I became a charity-holic overnight. Like alcohol or shopping, donating brought me a much-needed temporary escape. The list is long:
- A Place Called Home
- A Place of Comfort
- ACLU Foundation of Southern California
- Beautify Earth
- Cambodian Children's Fund
- Care.org
- Charity:Water
- Covenant House
- Doctors Without Borders
- First Place for Youth
- Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media
- Global Giving
- Heart of Los Angeles
- Kiva
- Las Familias del Pueblo
- Los Angeles Fire Department Foundation
- Miry's List
- NARAL ProChoice Nevada
- Planned Parenthood Federation of America
- Planned Parenthood Los Angeles
- Planned Parenthood of the Pacific Southwest
- Room to Read
- The Salvation Army
- School on Wheels
- Special Olympics Southern California
- Students Run L.A.
- The Tiyya Foundation
A few months ago, my daughter told me about the Sister District Project. And the more I googled them, the more I realized. It's not enough to help people help themselves. Prevention is better than cure, and we need to go to the source of the disease. We need to win state elections for Democrats who will ensure that our government works for all people, not just the minority in power.
So here's the sixty-year-old concerned citizen and the six-year-old bleeding heart hoping you'll support www.sisterdistrict.com.
If you're anywhere near Santa Monica California, please join us for our fundraising/recruitment party tomorrow Sunday February 25, 1-4pm, at Hands On O.T., 137 Bay Street #1, Santa Monica, CA 90405
